Care Malawi, in collaboration with government officials in Ntchisi, has successfully withdrawn 910 children from child labour and protected approximately 30,000 more since 2020. Limbani Chipembere, Education Program Lead for Care Malawi, attributes this achievement to the Proclaim project, which has been implemented in the district.
"The project's success can be attributed to the excellent coordination between our office and the government," Chipembere said during a groundbreaking ceremony for a new classroom block at Chandawe Primary School in Ntchisi district.
However, Chipembere cautioned stakeholders and parents to remain vigilant, as the recent increase in tobacco prices may lead to a higher demand for child labour in farms.
Vincent Raad from the Elimination of Child Labour in Tobacco Growing (ECLT) foundation emphasized the importance of education in preventing child labour.
"Once this classroom block is completed, we believe children in this area will remain in school instead of being employed at a tender age."
Andrew Banda, Head Teacher at Chandawe Primary School, welcomed the new project, stating that it will alleviate the school's current infrastructure challenges.
"We have been conducting classes in nearby churches due to inadequate classroom blocks, but with this new project, things will change for the better."
Currently, 194 of the rescued children have received learning materials through Care Malawi's Social Cash Transfer Program and have been reintegrated into school.
