COMESA Urges Unity for Free, Fair Malawi Polls

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has called on Malawi's political parties and electoral bodies to collaborate, ensuring the credibility and legitimacy of upcoming national elections.

Richard Atwaru, COMESA Senior Conflict Analyst, made the appeal during a National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust "Trainer of Trainers" workshop.

He confirmed COMESA is providing technical support to Malawi's Electoral Commission (MEC).

"A COMESA team has assessed preparedness since March 31," Atwaru stated. "Our support aims to ensure credible elections."

Echoing the focus on credibility, UNDP Elections Technical Advisor Isaack Okero Otieno highlighted the risk of voter apathy.

"Transparent and impartial management is vital," Otieno stressed. "The 2025 polls are a pivotal opportunity for Malawi to strengthen accuracy, impartiality, and inclusion – credible processes combat apathy."

NICE Public Trust Executive Director Grey Kalindakafe detailed the observer deployment: “We have deployed observers to cover all constituencies and wards across the country to ensure comprehensive monitoring," Kalindakafe said.

Kondwani Lumwira, a participant, emphasized the workshop's value: "This training is crucial," he said, "equipping observers with deeper knowledge to uphold transparency and impartiality."

Participants have been drawn across the nation.
