The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has disclosed that financial constraint owing to donor fatigue is restraining the body to hold the all-inclusive stakeholders conferences ahead of the 2025 polls.
The quasi religious body has been instrumental in conducting public roundtable conferences on issues that matter for the country such as, elections, politics and economy since 1995.
PAC spokesperson Bishop Gilford Matonga told Zodiak Online Monday that despite plans, they have been unable to source funds to convene such dialogues at a time the political landscape is heating up.
"Due to donor fatigue and other challenges, PAC has not been able to source enough resources to hold the conferences. Once we are able to source the funds, you will hear from us. The leadership of the PAC already made a decision to conduct such meetings, but at the moment, we haven't yet finalized raising the funds for that purpose," he said.
Matonga, however, disclosed that its 19 point resolution which was developed for advocacy in the successive conferences still stands for the stakeholders including political parties to embrace in their manifestos in preparation for the campaign trail.
Political scientist, Vincent Rangel says the PAC's voice and influence are needed now when social-economic woes and political violence continue reigning the country in the build-up to the elections.
"It is really worrisome that PAC has been quite. The PAC's four-year inactiveness when Malawians are facing challenges is not healthy for the democracy and raises questions. They should not allow us to speculate that this is because President Lazarus Chakwera is their fellow clergy man," he said.
In 2016, apart from enhancing accountability, stakeholders at the PAC conference generated notable recommendations such as, federalism adoption and the electoral law reform, particularly the 50+1 law but also change the Local Government Act.
