Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says is investigating perceived high cost of mobile data charges by mobile service operators in the country.

MACRA Deputy Director of Consumer Affairs, Thokozani Chimbe, says they are aware of a public outcry over data charges.

She said this on Thursday in Blantyre during a panel discussion on data experience in Malawi.

“We really want to get down to the issues that are making mobile data in Malawi expensive. Currently, there are various studies that are taking place.

“One of key issues is that mobile data in Malawi is expensive and people complain of quality service in terms of data services in Malawi,” she said.

Airetel Malawi Data Experience Manager, Michael Mang’anda, blamed lack of technical know-how among consumers on how some phone applications work is a challenge.

“If consumers use facilities in the device that control the usage of data, they would have realized the better services of their data,” he said.
