Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate, Patrick Kamisa, has granted bail to eight people accused of beating and undressing a woman in that city during the weekend.

The eight were arrested on 26th and 27 January following a video that was awash on social media.

In the bail ruling, Kamisa has ordered that the accused should pay a cash bail bond of 100 thousand Kwacha each, to bring a surety worth 200 thousand Kwacha each non cash.

They will also be required to report to Mzuzu police station every Friday and should surrender their travel documents.

Lawyer of the victim senior state advocate Jacob Nambiri said they asked for bail so as to avoid the accused interfering with their ongoing investigations.

“Our fears haven't been protected by the court, because it has granted bail, we only asked that the court put them on remand in the next four days so that we finish our investigations.

“But since the court has ordered that they be granted bail, then we accept the ruling of the court,” said Senior State Advocate Nambiri.

Victor Gondwe is representing the eight. He said bail is a right for the eight and he was pleased with the ruling and that the accused will not tamper with investigations.

“We will sit down with our clients on how to proceed,” indicated Gondwe.

The eight are answering charges of assaulting and insulting the modesty of a woman, and cyber stalking after a video clip went viral in which they were beating, insulting  and forcing a woman apologise over a misunderstanding they had picked.

Hearing of the case has been slated for 25th and 26th February.
