Rights Body Wants Local Leader to Face Law
A local child rights organization Foundation for Children’s Rights FCR has applauded Paramount Chief Mbelwa's move to terminate the services of one of his local leaders Group Village Headman Mahowe for marrying an underage girl.
The organization's Executive Director Jennipher Mkandawire Tuesday told Zodiak online action demonstrated by paramount chief Mbelwa sends a message to all local leaders in the country that those given authority to protect the rights of children should be the last to violate the same rights.
"No one is above the law and Inkosi Mbelwa has just demonstrated that. Marrying an underage is the least a local leader could do," said Mkandawire
The organization has since called on law enforcers to take up the matter and have the child right violator prosecuted.
" What happened is a crime and he needs to appear before the courts and justice should be seen," added Mkandawire.
However, as of Tuesday Zodiak has established that law enforcers were yet to take action on the matter.
National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera said police were still looking into the matter.
Currently, Mzimba Social Welfare Office has promised to support the victim as mandated by the child care protection and justice act, according to district Social Welfare Officer Dickson Ng’ambi.
Group Village headman German Mahowe 42 was serving right within the jurisdiction of Paramount Chief Mbelwa who is an ambassador on the promotion of girl’s rights.
The local leader is alleged to have been in a relationship with the victim in 2017 when she was 14 years old.
