President Lazarus Chakwera says an inquiry into abductions and killings of persons with albinism instituted by former president, Peter Mutharika, failed to establish perpetrators and market of the human tissues.

Through his press officer, Brian Banda, the president says has directed that the Terms of Reference be drawn for institution of a new committee to look into the matter.

“The investigations were not conclusive enough to find where the market for bones of person with albinism are. The report was not conclusive enough in finding out who are the people at the center of the malpractice.

“So, the president has instructed that new Terms of Reference should be drawn and after that the president will institute another committee that will deal decisively on this matter,” he said.

Banda says the committee will then “be able to find out whether the way things were done in the past should remain the same or there should be new ways of doing the same in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.”

President of the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi, Ian Simbota, says the president should institute a fresh inquiry on the matter.

“We are interested in a fresh commission of inquiry that was promised by Dr. Lazarus Chakwera during campaign period. He said that he was going to institute the commission of inquiry within first 100 days in office of which today we can confidently say that he has failed on his promise.

“But we still want to push Dr. Chakwera to fulfil his promise. He must institute his promise and follow all the right procedures that were already set,” he said.

Former President Peter Mutharika initiated the inquiry after the country witnesses a spate of abductions and killings of albinos ahead of the 2019 Tripartite Elections.
