Mota-Engil has today temporarily suspended construction works of the 83 kilometres Thyolo-Thekerani-Bangula road due to fuel scarcity.

Zodiak Online understands that for some time, National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) has been rationing 10, 000 litres weekly to the company instead of the required 40, 000 litres and now the commodity is not available.

The development has, consequently, grounded all the vehicles and plants have been packed at the site.

The company' Spokesperson Thomas Chafunya has confirmed the development to Zodiak, briefly indicating they will resume works once fuel is available.

"You know that when there is no fuel, there is not going to be work because you need fuel for the graders, tractors and machineries to operate. There is no any remedy until fuel is available," Chafunya said.

NOCMA spokesperson Chisomo Mwamadi has assured the the nation that the country has enough fuel stock, adding that Motal-Engil does not get their products from their institution since 2019 when the last supply contract expired.

"The reality is that Motal-Engil does not get its product from NOCMA since 2019 when the last supply contract ended. So the delays does not in anyway related to NOCMA's fuel importation and supply.

"So we want to reassure the Malawians that as a company we are doing all we can to make sure that the country is fuel secure and we  have enough stock as we speak," he assures.

The development comes as the road which commenced in 2016 has already missed the April 2022 deadline.
