Nsanje Woman Killed in Road Accident

Gladys Chatantha, 78, was last night killed in a road accident involving a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number BT 5427, which hit her at Chididi Turn off in Nsanje, along Chikwawa/Nsanje M1 road.

The district's police Spokesperson, Sub Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, told Zodiak Online this morning that the driver of the minibus, Mcleland Mlanga, aged 31, was enroute to Nsanje Boma from Bangula direction with four passengers on board.

She says the woman was walking on the edge of the nearside lane of the vehicle in question heading the opposite direction before being hit.

"The female pedestrian sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nsanje District Hospital.

"The driver and his passengers escaped unhurt while the motor vehicle had its front offside part depressed offside head lamp and indicator lens broken," indicates a police report.

She says the accident occurred at around 20:30pm.

The Nsanje police Spokesperson, has since confirmed arresting the driver, whom she says, "will answer a charge of causing death by reckless driving, contrary to section 126 of Road Traffic Act (RTA)."

The woman hailed from Lambwe village in the area of Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje, while the driver hails from Matope village in the area of T/A Mkalo in Chiradzulo district.
