Seasoned politician and gender Activist Patricia Kaliati on Tuesday distributed relief food to some hunger stricken families at Chitseko, Mwakhiwa and Matekenya villages in Traditional Authority Juma in Mulanje district.

The food items were mainly maize flour and fish (bonya).

The immediate past parliamentarian for Mulanje West constituency and Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare said this is the time people should share the little food they have with the foodless.

She also urged the citizenry to show love and care to the elderly saying they are pillars and sources of wisdom in their respective clans.

“It is unfortunate that while the country and the rest of the world are observing 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence, some ill-minded people are attacking the old citizens on accusations that they are witches or wizards, this is GBV,” said Kaliati.

75 year old Alfonso Chinangwa of Mwakhiwa village said people of good will should emulate what Kaliati has done saying there is acute hunger in the villages.

“We are very thankful to akweni (as they fondly call Kaliati) for her gesture and let others borrow a leaf from this,” said Chinangwa.

According to Kaliati, she will be distributing food items clan after clan and not to a larger group to avoid chaos that characterizes distribution of relief items.
