MALGA Wants More Money to Local Councils
11 August 2025
The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) says the number of firms applying for and obtaining product certification has increased by 10 percent compared to last year, reflecting growing appreciation of quality standards among local manufacturers.
MBS Director General Symon Mandala said the bureau has issued more than 1,000 product certification permits so far in 2026, up from about 925 during the same period last year.
Speaking to journalists in Lilongwe today during activities marking World Quality Week and a Product Certification Awards ceremony, Mandala attributed the increase to rising consumer demand for quality products.
The main local event will be held in Mzuzu on November 9.
“People are demanding quality products, and manufacturers now appreciate the value of standards in doing business,” said Mandala. “The figures are also increasing because of the various awareness initiatives we have been undertaking.”
One of the award recipients, Hirwa General Dealers, a manufacturer of powdered soap, detergents and other household products, said consistency has been key to achieving certification despite operating in a challenging business environment.
The company's founder, Flavian Hirwa, said maintaining product quality and adhering to standards have helped the business earn consumer trust and secure certification from MBS.
