Mzuzu University’s Hope Initiative says betting, financial challenges and relationship problems as key factors driving the rise of mental health issues among students in institutions across the country.
The University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Wapulumuka Mulwafu, said this during the launch of a mental health awareness campaign under the theme “Be Kind to Your Mind” at the University in Mzuzu.
Professor Mulwafu also noted that mental health challenges are becoming general issues across all institutions in this country including universities, and said that, this initiative aims to help students develop positive habits.
According to the Chairperson of Hope Initiative, Simeon Rashid, it's was wise to establish such an initiative support fellow students who are facing a number of issues including mental health.
Commenting on the same, Dr. Griffin Chirambo, a mental health expert and Senior Lecturer at the University, has urged students to refrain from gambling and other immoral behaviours to avoid mental health problems.
Meanwhile the Mzuni hope initiative involves, Students, Lectures, councillors from various hospitals and other mental health experts in the country.
