A recent report from Phalombe's forestry department reveals 75 arrests since January 2024 for illegal charcoal production, trafficking, and unauthorized forest entry.
According to Plantations Manager David Guta, the breakdown of arrests includes: 35 serving jail terms; Some released on police and court bail; 21 fined by the court.
Guta attributed the success to collaborative efforts between law enforcement, courts, and community members.
"To combat illegal activities in Michesi and Mulanje forests, we have strategic measures in place," Guta said, without disclosing details.
Environmental activist Maloto Chimkombero praised the district council's stance, citing its deterrent effect.
"Phalombe's forestry department sets a commendable example for other councils," Chimkombero said.
The crackdown began in January after concerned citizens reported rising illegal charcoal production and trafficking.
