Malawi's health sector is calling for increased public participation in blood donation drives to address chronic shortages affecting medical facilities nationwide.

The appeal comes as hospitals struggle to maintain adequate blood reserves for emergencies and critical procedures.  

Yolanda Geddes, Program Manager at Child Legacy International in Nsundwe, emphasized the urgency during a special donation campaign marking World Blood Donor Day. 

"Regular donations are vital to sustaining our healthcare system," Geddes stated at the event which targeted 100 pints for the national blood bank. 

This year's global theme - "Give blood, give hope: together we save lives" - holds particular significance in Malawi where shortages regularly disrupt maternal care, trauma treatment, and surgical services.  

Among respondents was Jessica Pine, a regular donor who says was moved by reports of blood scarcity. 

Her participation reflects growing public awareness, though health officials stress the need for consistent donations beyond annual campaigns. 

The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service is expanding collection points countrywide, with all donations undergoing rigorous safety screening. 

As the Nsundwe drive demonstrates, sustained community involvement remains crucial to securing Malawi's blood supply.
