Mulanje Mob Turns Nasty

There were nasty scenes on Monday morning when angry mob descended on two men suspected to have had a hand on the death of Mr. Rodrick Gomiwa on Sunday evening.
I rushed to the scene where village headman Ngundende and Mdodzola told me it was a horrible incident. The two chiefs alleged that James Kapesi and Chidziwitso Levi ambushed and killed Gomiwa as he was coming from a drinking spree at No-Money- No-Friends pub at Msikawanjala trading Centre. They said two allegedly kept the body at a grave yard a distance of about 100 metres from the bar. “It is alleged that Kapesi and Levi went to the bar where they started offering a dead body for sale to the bar owner. They allegedly pegged the body at a price of K500, 000 and the bar owner mobilized a mob that apprehended the two,” said the two chiefs. They took him to where they hid the body and upon seeing the body, the mob beat them up. Police rushed to the scene and rescued the two but Kapesi was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mulanje district hospital. According to police spokesperson in Mulanje Sub-Inspector Gresham Ngwira, the other suspect Chidziwitso Levi is still receiving treatment at the district hospital. The angry mob has also destroyed and set ablaze 11 houses and other valuable property, killed two goats and stole five goats and slashed maize crops of the suspected murders and their relatives. The mood was sombre with women and children crying uncontrollably at the time I reached villages Mdodzola, Ngundende and Richard where destructions have happened. Meanwhile police have said they are still investigating the matter.
