MCM Secures $49,336 for Presidential Debates

The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has received a funding boost of $49,336 (about K85.4 million) from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) to support the presidential debates lined up ahead of the 2025 general elections.

MCM Executive Director Moses Kaufa confirmed the development, saying the contribution will finance almost 60 percent of the $90,000 budget needed to organize the debates.

“This assistance has come at the right time. It will ensure Malawians are able to follow issue-based debates as the country gears up for the elections,” Kaufa said, while commending NED for responding to their funding request.

Political analyst Enerst Thindwa has also hailed the move, noting that debates provide voters with a rare opportunity to scrutinize presidential contenders.

“Debates are an important tool in a democracy. They compel candidates to move beyond rhetoric and explain how they plan to deal with the country’s challenges. Voters are then able to make informed choices,” Thindwa explained.

He has since encouraged presidential hopefuls to approach the debates seriously by outlining clear and practical solutions for Malawi.

According to the Presidential Debate Taskforce, three debates have been scheduled for 21 August, 29 August, and 4 September 2025.

Observers say the debates will not only enhance transparency and accountability but also enrich public dialogue as Malawians prepare to elect their next leader.
