The Malawi Congress Party has dismissed reports that two camps have emerged within the party, with one endorsing its president, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, to run again in 2030 and the other wanting him to step down.
Speaking to Zodiak Online, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Jessie Kabwila, said the party abides by its constitution, and whether Chakwera will stand as the party's presidential candidate will be determined by the National Executive Committee.
Kabwila added that many Malawians want Chakwera back to continue implementing road construction projects, job creation and other development programs.
"Malawians want Chakwera back because he is the pioneer of the developments being seen today, including road construction projects across the country," Kabwila said.
Meanwhile, political and good governance expert Dr. George Chaima said that it is often difficult for a political party to admit internal wrangles and urged MCP to resolve the issues before they escalate.
According to the MCP constitution, Dr. Chakwera is not allowed to stand again as the party's presidential candidate in 2030 unless the constitution is amended.
