Usi Pledges to Revive Banana Farming in Thyolo

Leader of the Odya Zake Alibe Mulandu party, Dr. Michael Usi, has pledged that his government would prioritize the revival of banana production in Thyolo District if elected.

Speaking during a whistle stop at Thekerani in the district on Thursday, Dr. Usi said his administration would establish farmer cooperatives and provide them with loans to boost banana cultivation. He observed that the outbreak of banana wilt disease years ago left many communities without a dependable source of livelihood.

“It is sad that Malawi is losing a lot of money importing bananas from other countries, yet this is something we can grow right here,” Dr. Usi said.

On politics, the Vice President and current Minister of Public Service added that his leadership would focus on putting the right people in key positions to ensure government delivers on its promises.

“Running government is not difficult. The problem is when people who are supposed to implement the President’s vision do their own things. If I become President, I will make sure only competent and honest Malawians take charge,” he said.

Dr. Usi further emphasized that his government would not be selective in appointing officials, promising to work with qualified people from various political parties.

“When I win, I will choose intelligent and honest people from DPP, MCP, UDF UTM, and other parties to govern with me,” he declared.

He also added that his administration will have regional ministers.

He also promised to tackle challenges of hunger, unemployment, and the rising cost of basic commodities such as sugar, fertilizer, and seed.
