The Chinese government has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering Malawi’s health system through medical assistance and infrastructure development.
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu, made the announcement on Thursday evening in Lilongwe during a ceremony welcoming the 12th cohort of the Chinese Medical Team, following the departure of the 11th batch.
“China will continue dispatching medical teams to Malawi, implementing paired hospital cooperation projects, and deepening practical collaboration in healthcare under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) framework," said Ambassador Xu.
Over the years, the Chinese Medical Team has contributed significantly to capacity building, clinical services, and the provision of medical equipment and supplies.
The ambassador expressed confidence that the 12th team would meet expectations in supporting local healthcare needs.
“The Chinese Medical Team has always been a bridge of friendship between our two countries," Xu stated. “We remain committed to working hand in hand with Malawi to strengthen its health system."
He also emphasized the critical need for international assistance to support Malawi’s healthcare sector.
Malawi’s Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, praised China as a reliable partner in the health sector.
“The Chinese Medical Team has treated over 400 Malawian patients and played a key role in reinforcing our health system," she said. “Their expertise and dedication have greatly enhanced our resilience against health challenges."
Chiponda highlighted another major benefit: the medical equipment and supplies each team brings to two major referral hospitals—Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe and Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) in the northern region.
“Since 2008, China has been sending specialized doctors—including physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, gynecologists, obstetricians, and radiologists—to help address Malawi’s shortage of medical specialists," she added. “This support is invaluable to our nation."
