The Ministry of Higher Education has launched a new online application system for public universities and colleges, designed to modernize student admissions and improve access to higher education.
Higher Education Minister Jessie Kabwila confirmed the rollout in an exclusive interview with Zodiak Online, describing it as a transformative step for Malawi's education sector.
"This digital platform marks a critical milestone in our nation's educational development," Kabwila said. "By aligning with the Malawi 2063 vision, we're creating a more efficient, transparent and equitable admissions process for all students."
The centralized system replaces paper-based applications, allowing prospective students to submit documents and track their status electronically.
Rose Kalizang'oma, Deputy Director of Teacher Education Development, noted the platform would particularly benefit rural applicants.
"Geographical barriers often prevented qualified candidates from applying," Kalizang'oma explained. "This digital solution removes those obstacles while reducing administrative burdens on institutions."
While welcoming the innovation, education policy analyst Daniel Chibwana cautioned that successful implementation would require careful planning.
"The transition to digital admissions promises significant benefits," Chibwana said, "but we must ensure adequate public awareness campaigns and technical support, especially for first-time applicants in remote areas."
The ministry estimates the new system will cut processing times by up to 60% while minimizing errors in student selection.
