The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) is urging people in areas where by-elections are expected this month not to take them for granted, as they are crucial for development and democratic governance.
Moses Kaunda, Thyolo District Programme Officer for NICE, says councillors and MPs elected on March 17 will make decisions affecting councils and the country.
Kaunda made the remarks Monday while mobilizing people in Muonekera Ward.
"The councillor and MP who win in the forthcoming by-elections will be key decision-makers as some will be chosen in various committees," he said, urging voters to turn out.
Sub-Traditional Authority Mangazi also appealed to residents to vote for a leader who will bring development.
The elections in Muonekera ward follows the death of councillor, late Elisha Joel Milanzi of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
At least six men submitted their nominations for post.
