NEEF Issues Warning to Irrigation Loan Beneficiaries

The National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) has cautioned beneficiaries of its Micro Irrigation Loans against misusing inputs, warning that communities found in violation will face withdrawal of support.

NEEF Chief Executive Officer Humphreys Mdyetseni issued the warning during the launch of the initiative in Traditional Authority (TA) Simphasi, Mchinji District. At the launch, the Malabanda Irrigation Scheme received maize seed, bags of fertilizer, and a solar-powered water pump.

Mdyetseni explained that the loans are designed to complement rain-fed agriculture, which has suffered from drought, impacting the country's food security. "NEEF is working with various stakeholders to ensure the inputs are used effectively," he emphasized.

Peter Michael Nkhoma, Chairperson of the Malabanda Irrigation Scheme, welcomed the K23.5 million irrigation loan, describing it as timely support for their 28-acre farmland. "Previously, we faced challenges in pumping water due to inadequate irrigation equipment and farming inputs. We expect this initiative will enhance the economic livelihoods of our 50 members," Nkhoma said.

Mchinji Central legislator Jephter Mwale also praised the initiative, highlighting its potential to address the persistent food shortages faced by smallholder farmers who rely on rain-fed agriculture.

The Micro Irrigation Loans aim to benefit 200,000 farmers nationwide. The initiative, already launched in the Southern and Central regions, is set to roll out in the Northern region next week.
