The creative industry in Malawi just got a boost with the launch of Kweza Quad, a vibrant event space that promises to showcase the country's rich artistic talent.

The launch event, held at Area 3 in Lilongwe on Sunday, drew attention from artists, art enthusiasts,  policymakers, and potential collaborators.

Robert Kapyepye, Board Chair of the Copyright Fund of Malawi said the launch is a milestone in the development of the arts industry in Malawi.

Kapyepye expressed delight in seeing the Kweza project's success and encouraged other artists to apply for funding.

"The Copyright Fund of Malawi is open to every Malawian with brilliant ideas. We encourage artists to apply for financial support from our fund. Kweza Quad is a perfect example of what can be achieved with the right support," said Kapyepye.

Kweza Quad plans to host regular events, including poetry nights, film screenings, and dance performances.

Q Malewezi, Founder and Creative Director at Kweza said the space is meant to promote both established and up and coming artists.

"Kweza Quad is more than just an event space; it's a platform for Malawian artists to express themselves freely. We've been operational for a while, hosting various programs, including writer's circles, open-stage events, and film screenings. Our goal is to meet artists at the point of need and support their growth," said Q Malewezi.

Kweza Quad received partial funding from the Copyright Fund, an arm of the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA), which aims to support the growth of Malawi's creative industry. 

The space also aims to support young people through its "Kweza Kids" program, promoting Malawian arts and culture.

The launch of Kweza Quad is expected to contribute to the growth of Malawi's creative industry, which has the potential to significantly impact the country's GDP, said Kapyepye.

He cited countries like South Africa, Nigeria and Zambia, which he said are raking in a lot of foreign exchange income through the creative industry.

The Copyright Fund of Malawi provides funding ranging from MK7,000,000 for area-specific projects to MK10,000,000 for regional projects and up to MK15,000,000 for national projects.
