NAM to Introduce Gate Charges for National League

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) says it has plans to introduce gate charges at match venues for the sson to be launched Bank National Premier League, a move aimed at boosting revenue for participating teams.

NAM President Vitumbiko Gubuduza said the initiative is part of the association’s efforts to make netball more commercially viable and self-sustaining.

“It’s time we start looking at netball not just as a sport, but also as an industry. By introducing gate charges, we want to help teams generate income to support their operations,” said Gubuduza.

However, Gubuduza acknowledged that implementing the plan may not be easy due to the current state of infrastructure.

“Most of our venues are not fully enclosed or equipped to support paid access. This is a challenge we must address if we are to move forward with this idea,” she added.

The FDH National Premier League, the first of its kind in Malawi, will feature 12 teams and has received a financial boost of MK1.2 billion from FDH Bank, spread over four years.

Sports analyst Parley Chinyama welcomed NAM’s decision but warned that logistical and infrastructural limitations could hinder its success.

“It’s a good move in principle, but implementation will be tough. Most of the netball courts in Malawi are open spaces with no clear entry points, making it difficult to control access and collect gate fees.”
