Traditional leaders in Thyolo have applauded outgoing District Commissioner (DC) Hudson Kuphanga, describing him as a humble and hardworking leader who has greatly contributed to the district’s development.
Chairperson for the Thyolo Chiefs Council, Senior Chief Mphuka — supported by Chief Kapichi, said Kuphanga demonstrated rare commitment and integrity throughout his service.
“Mr. Kuphanga has been a very dedicated and selfless leader who always wanted to see things move forward in this district. Iwo amkati Thyolo inyamuke, ndipo yanyamukadi (He used to say Thyolo should rise, and indeed it has risen)," said Senior Chief Mphuka.
“He carried out his duties with humility and genuine passion for development,” added Chief Kapichi.
Similarly, councillor Maggie Kambewa expressed sadness over the transfer.
"After we heard about the transfer, as councillors we wanted to write a letter to decline it, but since it's government decision we had a second thought of respecting the move," she disclosed.
The remarks were made on Tuesday during a council meeting where stakeholders discussed various development issues affecting the district including the new Goliati Urban Development Plan, and this year's Lean Season Programme.
In his farewell speech, Kuphanga expressed gratitude to all chiefs, councillors, government workers and development partners for supporting his leadership.
“I am grateful to everyone in Thyolo, the chiefs, councillors, government officers and all organisations, for the teamwork that has helped improve people’s lives,” he said.
He added, "I am a Christian, If at any point I wronged someone and did not perform to expectations, I ask for your forgiveness so that we continue to build a culture of unity and progress".
Under his leadership, the district registered several development milestones, including the construction of the new district council office complex, health posts, school blocks, market and Upstairs Thyolo Boma Junior Primary School.
Government has since appointed Elestina M’mame, formerly the Director of Administration for Thyolo as DC for Chiradzulu. Meanwhile, Willard Mwambo has taken over M’mame role at the council.
Former Director of Planning and Development for Machinga district, Noel Dakamau is replacing Kuphanga whose next working station remains unknown.
