BSM Launches Project to Translate Old Testament Study Bible into Chichewa

The Bible Society of Malawi (BSM) has embarked on a three-year project to translate the Old Testament Study Bible into Chichewa, aiming to make biblical studies more accessible to lay pastors and Bible students.

According to Wilfred Ngalawa, Projects Director at BSM, the new translation seeks to ensure that those who did not receive formal theological training can still study and preach effectively, without missing crucial biblical insights.

"Many of our pastors in Malawi don’t have the opportunity to access in-depth biblical resources," said Ngalawa. "That’s why we are translating this Study Bible—to simplify complex teachings and provide clarity, just like the English version."

This initiative builds upon the success of the New Testament Buku Loyera Study Bible, completed in 2017, which, according to Ngalawa, saw a huge demand for study notes, prompting the decision to expand the translation to the Old Testament.

To support the project, BSM has organized a High Tea fundraiser on June 21 at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe, drawing support from professional and business women across Malawi.

Wezzie Kanthunzi, chairperson of the fundraising committee, emphasized the importance of financial contributions to meet the K50 million budget target.

"Our goal is to raise K50 million to support the translation," Kanthunzi stated.

"As of today, we have secured K12 million, but we need additional support to reach our goal. Churches have also joined our campaign to help make this project a reality."

In addition to translating the Study Bible, Ngalawa said BSM is committed to inclusivity, ensuring that the Word of God reaches all communities, including the deaf community.

"The Bible Society's strategic plan focuses on making the Bible accessible to everyone," said Ngalawa. "Last year, we responded to the call to provide a Bible for the deaf community. This translation project is another step toward ensuring that everyone has access to the Word in a format they can understand."

The BSM hopes that this project will empower pastors, teachers, and believers across Malawi to minister with clarity, ensuring that the Word of God is not only available but also understood," added Ngalawa.
