Stakeholders Demand Policy Reforms to Tackle Youth Unemployment

Economic stakeholders have called on the government to implement bold reforms that remove barriers preventing young Malawians from engaging in agriculture and economic growth, warning that inaction could worsen the country’s unemployment crisis.

The demand was made during a high-level ministerial panel organized by Youth and Society (YAS) in Lilongwe, where economists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers discussed solutions to youth unemployment and underfunded agribusiness ventures.

Dr. Bertha Chikadza, President of the Economics Association of Malawi, urged authorities to revise tax policies that hinder young farmers and small business owners.

“The current tax structures are stifling growth. If we want youth to engage in agriculture, it must be profitable for them,” she said.

Clara Kamlomo, a young agripreneur, echoed frustrations over limited access to financing.

“How can our businesses grow when loans remain out of reach? Systemic changes are needed to support young entrepreneurs,” she argued.

In response, Finance Minister Simplex Chitchola Banda stated that the government has already established policies to foster a supportive business environment.

“The groundwork is laid. Now, young people must think creatively to seize the opportunities available,” he said.

Agriculture Minister Sam Dalitso Kawale emphasized the need for adaptability amid climate challenges.

“The future of farming depends on smart, resilient practices. Young farmers must embrace innovation to thrive,” he added.

With youth unemployment at critical levels, the summit’s push for policy changes could mark a pivotal moment—but only if discussions translate into action.
