Man Arrested for Defilement

As defilement cases continue to rise in the country, the police in Lilongwe have arrested a 43-year-old man identified as Patulani Jayid from Aginesi village, Traditional Authority Chiseka in the district for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl.

Lilongwe Police deputy spokesperson Sub Inspector Foster Benjamin said Patulani was arrested on Tuesday, 16th August, after he was caught ‘red handed’ by the girl’s uncle.

Jayid is said to have been committing this offence since June 1 this year after enticing support to her two siblings aged 12 and 6 years respectively which she looks after.

According to the police, the man was taken into police custody where he admitted having sex with the victim.

Defilement is a crime under Section 138 of the Penal Code. It attracts a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The victim was taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where it was confirmed that she had been defiled.

“As police, we are leaving no stone unturned to end this habit and we are going around communities to sensitize people about the evils of indulging in sexual crime,” he warned.
