The European Union has invested €3.5 million in the Elect Her, Retain Her post-election programme, implemented with Oxfam, to help women who made it into Parliament strengthen their leadership and retain their seats in 2030.
EU Ambassador Daniel Aristi-Gaztelumendi said the EU remains committed to gender equality citing that every project and programme they finance has a gender dimension .
"The initiative aims to provide targeted support to women parliamentarians, ensuring they continue to perform effectively in their roles," he said.
Oxfam Gender Justice Programme and Policy Manager Sara Kambilinya stressed that women should not only take centre stage in decision making spaces but must also be fully supported to thrive.
"women should not only make breakthroughs in decision making spaces but also be fully supported to be successful in the positions they occupy," she said.
She said although there have been a lot of strides in increasing women’s representation in Parliament, more still needs to be done in as much as promotion of women leadership is concerned.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson for the Women’s Caucus in Parliament Mary khembo Maulidi said they have made deriberate effort to make sure that women voices are heard in parlimenent and that women are able to express themselves freely.
A total of 48 women were elected to Parliament in the 16 September elections.
