Honeymoon Over For Criminals; New Deputy Police Boss

Chaima and his wife during the farewell event

Newly appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police responsible for operations, Stain Chaima, has warned that “the honeymoon is over for criminals in the country,” saying the police will step up operations to ensure Malawi remains safe.

Speaking on Saturday during a farewell event organised by the South Eastern Region Police in Luchenza — where Chaima previously served as Regional Commissioner — he said the new leadership has already put strategies in place aimed at reducing crime.

“My message is that the honeymoon is over for criminals in the country,” Chaima told Zodiak. “We are committed to tighten security and will intensify operations so that Malawians can live and work without fear.”

Chaima also appealed to officers across the service to keep professional standards high. “I urge fellow police officers to uphold the rule of law and maintain professionalism so we can sustain the peace and security our country continues to enjoy,” he said.

Luchenza Municipality Chief Executive Officer Wanyapakucha McPhine Mzumara praised Chaima’s record in the South Eastern Region, saying his tenure brought visible improvements in local security.

“Chaima has been a dedicated officer who significantly strengthened security in the area during his time as Deputy Commissioner,” Mzumara said. “We thank him for his service and wish him well in his new role.”

Traditional leaders at the event also stressed the importance of impartial policing and community engagement.

Senior Chief Chimombo of Nsanje urged Chaima to avoid favoritism and to work closely with local leaders to bolster security at community level.

“Do not show favoritism in your duties,” Senior Chief Chimombo told the gathering, calling on the police to promote professionalism and maintain strong ties with community leaders to enhance safety for all. You also need to remember your fellow officers here," the chief pleaded.

The top leadership of the Malawi Police Service now includes Inspector General Richard Luhanga, Deputy Inspector General responsible for administration Dr. Noel Kayira, and Deputy Inspector General responsible for operations Stain Chaima — all of whom previously served in leadership roles within the South Eastern Police Region.

Two week ago, President Professor Peter Mutharika appointed Chaima, barely a month after he was also promoted to the regional commissioner for South East.
