Japan Urges Malawi to Harness Research for Development

The Japanese government has urged Malawi to make greater use of research findings to drive its development agenda.

Speaking during a reception for the 2025 Japanese Scholarships Alumni in Lilongwe last night, Japanese Ambassador Yoichi Oya said research and innovation are critical tools for achieving the country’s developmental aspirations.

Ambassador Oya noted that Japan continues to support Malawi through investments in human resource development to build a skilled workforce capable of advancing sustainable growth.

“This is why the Japanese government has been supporting Malawi by investing in its human resource — the engine for sustainable development,” he said. “Innovation and technology are key drivers of progress, and Japanese scholarships play a crucial role in promoting capacity development.”

Director of Education in the Ministry of Education, Ruth Samati Kambali, described Japan as a key partner in implementing the Malawi 2063 education pillar, stressing the importance of translating research into practical solutions.

“We urge our alumni to put research into action, particularly in areas that can improve access to education and drive innovation,” she said.

One of the alumni, Stewart Ngalonde, who studied at Kyushu University, said the Japanese scholarships have played a vital role in empowering Malawians with technical and research skills needed to spur national development.
