The Roads Fund Administration (RFA) says it is still waiting for funds to roll out additional toll gates in the country.
Speaking to Zodiak Online, RFA spokesperson Masauko Mngwaluko said compensation has already been paid to people whose land will be used for the construction of toll gates.
According to Mngwaluko, the new toll gates will be erected at Naluva along the Lilongwe–Salima Road and at Chileka along the Lilongwe–Mchinji Road.
“Once we have mobilized enough funds, construction of toll gates at these earmarked places will begin,” Mngwaluko said.
However, Willy Kambwandira, Executive Director of the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT), said Malawians rarely see the benefits of tollgates, citing a lack of transparency in revenue management amid the poor state of roads across the country.
“Malawians need to be updated on where these revenues go; otherwise, they do not really see the benefits,” Kambwandira said.
In October this year, the RFA disclosed that it had collected K12.6 billion from the Chingeni and Kalinyeke toll gates since their inception in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
