Authorities in Salima, Mangochi, and Rumphi have hailed the Life-AR project, describing it as a practical response to the devastating effects of climate change.
Launched in 2022, Life-AR is a community-led initiative that empowers people to design and implement local solutions to environmental challenges. The project is currently being piloted in the three districts but is expected to roll out nationwide by 2027.
In Mangochi, the project is helping communities under Traditional Authority Nankumba to revive the Ang’ona Irrigation Scheme, which was destroyed by recurrent floods, including Cyclone Freddy.
Acting Environmental Officer for Mangochi District Council, Annette Mlenga, said the revival of the scheme will transform livelihoods.
“Once operational, the Ang’ona Irrigation Scheme will benefit nearly 5,000 people economically,” she said.
Eliza Msuku, Chairperson of the Mbwadzulu Area Development Committee, added that beyond irrigation, Life-AR is promoting environmental stewardship.
“The scheme will improve our family incomes, but we are also leading initiatives to raise awareness on forest conservation,” she said.
In Rumphi, Director of Planning and Development, Frank Mfune highlighted progress in the Chitimba catchment area.
“The project is addressing water challenges. Once complete, communities in Chitimba will have access to clean water drawn from holy water sources atop Livingstonia Mountain,” he explained.
Grave Gondwe, Chairperson of the Chitimba Water Users Association, confirmed progress, saying only a few final stages remain before water is piped to the people.
Rumphi Life-AR focal person, Gift Nyirenda said the project goes beyond water supply.
“We are also promoting forest conservation, beekeeping, and irrigation schemes to demonstrate diverse climate change solutions,” he said.
After touring the project sites, Tikondane Vega, Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Natural Resources, expressed satisfaction with the initiative.
“We are convinced that Life-AR is ready to expand to other districts. By 2027, it will be implemented nationwide to address climate change challenges affecting nearly every part of the country,” he said.
