MUST Develops Organic Urine-Based Fertilizer

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) is making major strides in transforming agriculture through an innovative organic fertilizer that promises farmers a cheaper, more sustainable way to improve yields.

The granulated fertilizer, developed by Dr. Jabulani Nyengere, a senior lecturer and Postgraduate Coordinator at MUST, is made from a unique blend of rock minerals and treated liquid urine.

After passing all required tests, it has shown strong potential as an alternative to expensive conventional inorganic fertilizers.

Field trials at Bvumbwe Research Station in Thyolo, conducted under rainfed maize production, found the fertilizer performed on par with inorganic options.

The results point to improved soil fertility and higher crop productivity - a welcome development for Malawi’s smallholder farmers.

According to Dr. Nyengere, the innovation was designed to tackle cost and access challenges that limit rural farmers.

“Our goal is to provide an accessible fertilizer solution that can support farmers, especially those in rural communities,” he said.

Following the successful trials, MUST is now moving to scale up production and test the fertilizer across different agroecological zones.

The university is also working closely with the Department of Agricultural Research Services (DARS) and other stakeholders to complete the registration process for wider commercial use.
