Local Chiefs 'Crash' over Calls to Remove IMF, World Bank in Africa

Some traditional leaders in the country have given contrasting views on suggestions to abolish the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank from Malawi and Africa.

Traditional Authority Nkula of Machinga has backed the calls, saying it is high time African countries unite and address their own challenges.

"We appreciate the support these organisation give us but whenever they decide to withdrawal their support shows that this support is not permanent," said T/A Nkula.

"We have been assisted for quite a long time but not much has changed, I think African countries must unite and address our challenges locally as Africa," he added.

However, Senior Chief Kanyenda of Nkhotakota disagrees with this, blaming lack of patriotism, corruption and lack of proper management of resources as the root of the current challenges Malawi is facing.

Senior Kanyenda gave an example of vibrant projects that have collapsed due to lack of self support as Malawi.

"These institution have been pumping a lot of resources to Malawi but there is too much mismanagement among the citizenry from those on top to the layman in the village. We can't blame the IMF and World Bank as the causes, we are our own problem," said Senior Chief Kanyenda.

This comes as renowned Malawian activist Mavuto Bamusi suggested that African countries unite and demand the IMF and World Bank to leave.

Speaking at the African International People’s Tribunal in Lilongwe on Thursday, Bamusi said several policy frameworks by the two Bretton Woods institutions have contributed a little to the continent’s development.
