Malawi National Women’s Football Team Head Coach, Lovemore Fazili, says Thursday night’s international friendly against Morocco has given his side a crucial test and valuable insights ahead of their Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Angola in October.
The Scorchers looked sharp early on at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Casablanca, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the first 40 minutes. However, the host nation, Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, mounted a strong comeback, scoring four unanswered goals to win the encounter 4-2 at full time.
Despite the defeat, Fazili remains upbeat about the team’s overall performance.
“It was a good test for us. We showed some good quality in the first half, and that gives me a lot of hope,” said Fazili. “Of course, we conceded goals we shouldn’t have, but this is why we play such games – to learn and improve. I’m confident we’ll fix these issues before facing Angola.”
The Scorchers’ goals came courtesy of France-based captain Tabitha Chawinga, who plays for Olympique Lyon, and Rose Kabzere of Montpellier, both scoring in the opening half. Morocco equalized and surged ahead in the second half, aided by an own goal from Bernadette Mkandawire.
Fazili emphasized the importance of playing strong opponents in the team’s preparations.
“This match, like the ones we had against Zambia and South Africa earlier this year, is part of our plan to expose the team to high-level competition. The players are learning and adapting, which is encouraging.”
The Scorchers have now played three high-profile friendlies in 2025, following previous encounters with Zambia’s Copper Queens and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in March and April.
As preparations intensify for October’s crucial clash against Angola, Fazili says the team will continue to sharpen tactics, build cohesion, and improve fitness levels.
“We still have time. We are going to work hard on all areas of concern. The spirit in the camp is high, and we believe we are on the right path,” he added.
