The Society of Medical Doctors in Malawi has welcomed the launch of the Women Doctors Association of Malawi (WDOM), expressing optimism that the new body will promote professionalism and improve healthcare service delivery.
Chairperson of the society, Dr. Victor Mithi, said while all doctors share a common goal, female doctors often face unique challenges that require targeted support.
“Much as we are all doctors, we recognize that there are special needs among female doctors. They may need a space to meet, share experiences, and discuss issues specific to their context,” said Dr. Mithi.
The newly appointed chairperson of WDOM, Dr. Bridget Malewezi, said the association currently has 150 members. She noted that her first priority will be to grow the membership base to help the group reach its objectives.
“We are working to promote mentorship, leadership, and collaboration across different levels of the medical profession,” she said.
Meanwhile, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Samson Mndolo, pledged the ministry’s support for the new association. He said WDOM will be involved in health policy discussions, and supported in its training and leadership initiatives, as part of efforts to address the unique challenges faced by women in the profession.
Dr. Malewezi also emphasized that her leadership will work hard to end the negativity surrounding the medical field and to inspire more girls to pursue careers in medicine.
