Parliament has on Thursday confirmed Richard Luhanga as the new Inspector General (IG) of the Malawi Police Service.
The motion—which did not pass through the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) as the committee is yet to be constituted—sailed through without opposition, with almost all legislators supporting the confirmation.
Parliament resumed deliberations on Thursday morning with a focus on Luhanga’s confirmation. Legislator for Dedza Kasina Constituency, Joshua Malango, initiated the discussion, calling on the House to deliberate on the matter.
Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhito, presented Luhanga’s nomination, and the motion was seconded by Minister of Local Government, Ben Phiri.
In his presentation, Mukhito said Luhanga’s appointment is part of the government’s efforts to enhance transparency, accountability, and professionalism within the Malawi Police Service.
“Luhanga is a man of experience in the Police. The government supports him, and so does the opposition. He will deliver,” said Mukhito.
Opposition spokesperson on security affairs, Joshua Malango, backed the appointment, urging the incoming IG to serve with impartiality and uphold the rule of law.
“He [Luhanga] has risen through different ranks to where he is today. We expect him to be an Inspector General who respects the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, and one who is fair and professional,” said Malango.
Born on 9 June 1971 in Rumphi, Richard Luhanga was appointed by President Arthur Peter Mutharika early last month. He succeeds Merryn Yolamu, the former Inspector General of Police.
