In a powerful demonstration of national unity, outgoing President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and Vice President Dr. Michael Usi will attend the swearing-in ceremony of President-Elect Professor Peter Mutharika this Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium.
The event, which marks a peaceful transfer of power between political rivals, is being hailed by experts as a significant milestone for Malawi's democracy.
The historic occasion will also feature the nation's living political history, with former Presidents Dr. Bakili Muluzi and Dr. Joyce Banda confirmed to be in attendance. This unprecedented gathering of the country's top leadership underscores a shared commitment to the constitutional order.
Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Information and Digitalization, Baldwin Chiyamwaka, confirmed the attendance of both Dr. Chakwera and Dr. Usi in a statement issued Tuesday.
Political and governance analysts have praised the move, stating it sets a crucial precedent. Mavuto Bamusi, Publicity Secretary for the Political Science Association, said the development is a clear sign of maturity in the country’s democracy.
“This moves the nation away from politics of bitterness and towards a culture where the state and its institutions are bigger than any individual,” Bamusi emphasized.
Echoing similar sentiments, Fellow analyst Yamikani Chitete highlighted the symbolic importance of the act.
“By being present, President Chakwera is sending a message of national unity and stability,” Chitete said. “He is assuring citizens and the international community that Malawi's democratic processes are resilient and that the country remains united beyond political contests.”
Chitete added that the presence of former Presidents Muluzi and Banda further enriches this narrative, creating a rare moment where the nation's past, present, and future leadership stands together.
The ceremony marks Professor Peter Mutharika's return to the highest office, following his recent electoral victory.
