In a rare display of political unity, government and opposition leaders in Parliament have commended President Peter Mutharika for approving former president Lazarus Chakwera’s diplomatic mission to Tanzania.
Leader of the House Jappie Mhango and Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda told Parliament on Wednesday that the decision demonstrates a commitment to national interest over partisan politics.
Mhango said the President’s approval shows openness to working with capable Malawians irrespective of political affiliation.
“President Mutharika will continue working with competent individuals, including those from the opposition, on national assignments,” he said.
He added that the gesture reflects political tolerance and acknowledges the importance of Chakwera’s role in leading the Commonwealth delegation mediating post-election tensions in Tanzania.
Chithyola Banda also welcomed the move, describing it as a positive step toward national cohesion.
“This reflects the spirit of Ubuntu and the unity we always advocate for,” he told Parliament.
Former president Chakwera is currently in Tanzania, where he is heading the Commonwealth mission engaging political and civic stakeholders, including President Samia Suluhu, in efforts to ease tensions following the country’s disputed presidential election.
