As President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to address the nation on Monday, political and human rights activists say they expect the president to tackle issues of fertilizer subsidy, forex availability, hunger, and peaceful elections.
Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Chairperson Gift Trapense says the president needs to come out clear on how the government is preparing for the fertilizer subsidy program, dealing with hunger, and improving the economy.
"We hope the President will give a message of hope to Malawians this evening. Malawians need answers on issues of fertilizer and economy," he said
Publicity secretary for the Political Science Association, Mavuto Bamusi says this is an opportunity for the president "to deliver an exit state of the national address for his first term."
Bamusi also stresses that this is an opportunity for the president to inform Malawians how his government intends to solve the economic challenges affecting the people.
"There is a lot which as an institution expect from the President this evening. Hunger issues, economy and mostly peace needs to be emphasized on as we head to the general elections on 16 September," said Bamusi.
Chakwera’s address comes just seven days before Malawians head to the polls in the general elections on 16th September.
