Mutharika Preaches Peace, Unity Ahead of Elections

Former President Peter Mutharika has called on Malawians to embrace peace, unity and love during the campaign period leading up to the September 16 general elections.

Mutharika submitted his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), officially confirming his candidacy under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

He said his decision to run for office again was driven by public demand and expressed his commitment to national development.

“We are ready to serve. Malawi is the only home we have and we must take responsibility for its future,” he said.

He also introduced former MEC Chairperson Jane Ansah as his running mate, describing her as a capable leader with a strong track record.

“I’ve worked with Jane Ansah for years. She’s a former High Court judge, an experienced administrator and a woman of faith. Her background and dedication make her an asset to our nation,” he said.

Ansah’s selection drew attention, given her past role at the helm of the electoral body. Mutharika said her experience would be vital in helping move the country forward.

In her address, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja reminded candidates that the campaign period is a time to present policies—not to incite divisions.

“Every Malawian has the right to contest. But let us all respect the constitution and promote issue-based campaigns. Elections must be free, fair and peaceful,” Mtalimanja said.
