On Sunday, President Arthur Peter Mutharika named his partial cabinet and government official appointments as he assumes leadership of the country as Malawi's seventh president.
President Mutharika has appointed Enock Chihana as his second vice president, Joseph Mwanamveka as the new minister of finance, economic planning and development and Alfred Gangata as his minister of state.
The president has also appointed Lieutenant General George Alexander Jafu as Chief of Defence for the Malawi Defence Force, Dr. Justin Saidi as Chief Secretary and Kiswell Dakamau as Director of State Residences.
Richard Luhanga has been appointed as the new Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, Stain Chaima as the Deputy Inspector General of Operations and Noel Kaira as the Deputy Inspector General of Administration.
Following the appointments, the National Anti-Corruption Alliance has expressed concern with the appointment of some people who it says are allegedly answering corruption cases in courts.
Chairperson for the National Anti-Corruption Alliance (NACA), Michael Kaiyatsa says this would have an impact on the trust of Malawians, urging the president to walk the talk on corruption.
"Already we are concerned because we had made an appeal with the president to ensure he appoints people of integrity, people that have nothing to do with corruption. this will undermine the president's trust on Malawians," said Kaiyatsa.
However, Kaiyatsa says the appointments signifies a regional balance in the top leadership positions, arguing this will unify the country as everyone is being represented.
"You can actually see that the three regions have been well represented in these appointments which will bring national unity," he added.
An economist, Abel Mwenibanda has tipped the newly appointed Minister of Finance, Joseph Mwanamvekha to look into forex shortages decisively so as to stabilize the country's economy among others.
"It is very important at this point that the issue of forex be looked at, so as it attracts investors from across the globe. Availability of farm inputs also has to be a priority through collaboration between the ministry and other ministries and agencies," said Mwenibanda.
