Peace Commission Forecasts Calm Elections on September 16

The Malawi Peace and Unity Commission has projected peaceful elections on September 16, citing the spirit of unity that has characterized the campaign period since July.

Director General of the Commission, Ali Phiri, made the remarks in Thyolo today at the close of a three-day training for electoral stakeholders organized in partnership with the Center for Multiparty Democracy (CMD), with support from the UNDP and the United Nations.

“We have observed a peaceful campaign trail since July, and we are optimistic that stakeholders will put into practice the lessons learned here to ensure that the elections are conducted in peace,” said Phiri.

The training focused on equipping participants with knowledge of different forms of violence, strategies for prevention, and approaches to conflict resolution before, during, and after polling day.

Speaking on behalf of the District Commissioner, Bryan David Mkandawire hailed the initiative, describing it as timely and essential.

“This training has come at the right time. It will help us maintain peace throughout the electoral process and beyond,” Mkandawire said.

Political party representatives also committed to peaceful conduct ahead of the polls. PETRA District Governor Reverend Alex Dyton Malinga and UTM District Governor Jenifer Seunda pledged to abide by electoral laws and ensure violence-free rallies.

Malinga pledged:“We will make sure that our campaign activities remain peaceful and in line with the law”.

The training concluded with party officials signing a Memorandum of Understanding reaffirming their commitment to peace.
