All to Play for: Flames Take Slim Lead to SA

Pasuwa; we’re not going to South Africa to sit back and defend

Local football analysts have cautioned the Malawi national football team, the Flames, to remain focused and disciplined as they head to South Africa for the second leg of their 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Bafana Bafana.

The warning comes after Malawi claimed a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg at Bingu National Stadium, giving them a slim advantage to defend on foreign soil.

Home Advantage a Key Factor

Commentators Christopher Njeula and Henry Gome say South Africa will be determined to bounce back on their home turf, where they’ve historically been tough to beat.

“This is a dangerous position. South Africa will come hard at us, especially at home. The Flames need to stay compact, focused, and avoid costly mistakes,” said Njeula.

Gome added that the pressure of playing away in front of a home crowd will test the Flames’ mental strength and tactical discipline.

“It’s not just about skill, but composure and teamwork. The boys must stay organized and stick to the game plan.”

Flames head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has emphasized that his side is well-prepared for the challenge and understands the importance of the match.

“We know what’s at stake. This is a crucial step toward CHAN qualification, and the boys are focused and ready,” said Pasuwa.

He also made it clear that despite having a 1-0 advantage, Malawi will not adopt a defensive approach.

“We’re not going to South Africa to sit back and defend. We are going to play to win. That’s our mindset, we need to be brave and positive,” he added.

Pasuwa confirmed that midfielder Zebron Kalima did not make the trip after suffering a knock in training.

“It’s unfortunate to lose Zebron at this stage, but we’ve adjusted and are confident in the rest of the squad,” he said.
