Mighty Wanderers FC climbed to the summit of the TNM Super League table for the first time this season with a commanding 2-0 victory over Dedza Dynamos at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

The win, secured by goals from Promise Kamwendo and Isaac Kaliyati, saw the Nomads leapfrog rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets by a single point after eight rounds of action in the 16-team top-flight league.

Former Dynamos forward Kamwendo haunted his old club with a neat finish in the 7th minute, giving Wanderers a dream start. Winger Isaac Kaliyati doubled the lead in the 56th minute with a stunning free kick, a signature strike that left the home crowd silenced.

Speaking after the match, Mighty Wanderers head coach Bob Mpinganjira praised his players for their discipline and execution.

“It was a tough game, but the boys stuck to the plan. I’m happy with the early goal because it helped us control the tempo. Going top is good motivation, but we know it’s still early days. We need to stay focused," said Mpinganjira.

Dedza Dynamos, who had been unbeaten this season under Alex Ngwira who was appointed four weeks ago struggled to break down a compact Wanderers defence.

Ngwira admitted his side were second best on the day.

“We started slowly and conceded too early, which unsettled us. We tried to get back into the game but Wanderers were more clinical. We will regroup and work on areas that let us down,” Ngwira said.

Meanwhile, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who did not feature in league action over the weekend due to their Airtel Top 8 semifinal fixture against Karonga United, slipped to second place.

Elsewhere in the league, newcomers Ekhaya FC continued their fairytale start to life in the top tier with a 3-1 win away to Mzuzu City Hammers.

Goals from Andrew Lameck, Wongani Kaponya and Clever Chikwata ensured maximum points for Enos Chatama’s side, who now sit third, three points behind Wanderers.

Blue Eagles also picked up a vital 2-1 victory over struggling MAFCO FC to climb to fourth in the standings.
