At least 21 companies and cooperatives are showcasing their products and innovations at the first-ever Thyolo District Agriculture Trade Fair, which opened today at Bvumbwe under the theme “Towards Commercialisation and Economic Transformation Through Smart and Sustainable Agricultural Systems.”
Speaking during the official opening, Thyolo District Commissioner Hudson Kuphanga urged farmers to embrace agribusiness and adopt a commercial mindset to boost productivity and transform their livelihoods.
“We are encouraging farmers to think beyond subsistence farming. By forming groups and accessing grants through programmes such as AGCOM, they can increase production and contribute meaningfully to the goals of Malawi 2063,” said Kuphanga.
The two-day fair, organized by the district’s agriculture office, has attracted exhibitors from across the Southern Region, including agro-solution providers, research institutions, and farmer cooperatives.
Representing the Programs Manager for Blantyre Agriculture Development Division (ADD), Dr. Edwin Khulungo highlighted the role of such fairs in connecting farmers to suppliers and potential markets.
“Agriculture fairs provide a vital platform where farmers meet suppliers, learn new technologies, and explore better markets for their produce. These linkages are key to improving agricultural productivity and sustainability,” said Khulungo.
Among the exhibitors, APECKC Agri-Solutions showcased its Clean Energy Water Pumping System, which allows farmers to irrigate their crops without relying on fuel, electricity, or mechanical power.
“Our technology is designed for smallholder farmers who struggle with irrigation costs. With this system, they can water their crops efficiently and sustainably,” explained company representative Mphatso Chikondi.
The fair also recognized outstanding participants, with Masambanjati-Molele Cooperative receiving the Best Cooperative Award, Alipo Suppliers—producers of Mizu Organic Fertilizer—being named Best Exhibitor, and Bvumbwe Research Station winning the Service Provider Award.
Organizers say the event will continue tomorrow, offering more learning and networking opportunities for local farmers and agribusiness players.
