The US President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) has announced its continued support for Malawi's fight against malaria, having provided $400 million and approximately K700 billion since 2006 for prevention and control activities.
This commitment was reaffirmed by PMI Team Leader for Malawi, Jannel Rough, during the launch of the 2024 Insecticide Treated Nets Mass Distribution Campaign and Commemoration of the SADC Malaria Week in Balaka.
Malawi has made significant progress in reducing malaria prevalence by 70% since 2013.
Rough emphasized PMI's dedication to eradicating malaria by 2030, particularly among children and pregnant women.
Deputy Minister of Health Halima Daudi highlighted the ongoing risk of malaria for all Malawians, with 6.4 million cases confirmed in 2023.
The government's distribution of mosquito nets is a crucial intervention in controlling the disease.
Globally, malaria remains a significant health concern, with over 200 million cases diagnosed annually.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has spent over $50 billion to combat malaria through malaria drug and insecticide-treated mosquito net procurement.
The WHO aims to reduce malaria incidence and mortality rates by at least 90% by 2030.
The US government, through USAID and the PMI, plays a vital role in global malaria efforts.
With a focus on expanding access to key malaria control interventions, the PMI has set ambitious goals for 2026, including reducing malaria mortality by one-third in high-burden countries.
