The Ministry of Health says it has stepped up efforts towards the management of any possible cholera outbreak in this year's cholera season.
Ministrys spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe told Zodiak Online that, among others, district hospitals have ordered critical supplies like drugs and chlorine from the Central Medical Stores Trust, which have already been dispatched so far.
"In Malawi, the cholera season starts from 1st November and ends in October of the following year. Reaching this far, preventive messages have already been shared with the public," Chikumbe said.
He added, "Any public hospital which has yet to ordered the supplies, then it owes the Ministry an explanation."
Meanwhile, health rights activist Maziko Matemba notes that such commitment is crucial in the fight against cholera.
Said Matemba, "The authorities' level of cholera preparedness is commendable. We are looking forward to a timely response to any possible cholera outbreak."
Between 2022-2023, Malawi had one of the worst cholera outbreaks, where over 52,000 cases were recorded with over 1,700 deaths across the country, according to the Ministry of Health.
