Malawi NGO's Pen US President on Travel Restrictions

Kajoloweka; signed the joint letter to Trump

The Youth and Society and the National Advocacy Platform have penned President of the United States of America Donald Trump, calling for a reconsideration over the recent restrictions on Malawian travelers to the U.S. imposed by his government.

This comes after the US government announced that effective 20 August 2025, Malawian citizens applying for a B1/B2 visa will now be required to post a bond of up to USD 15,000.

In a statement signed by Executive Director for the Youth and Society, Charles Kajoloweka, and National Advocacy Platform Chairperson, Benedicto Kondowe, the two say Malawian students, scholars, and exchange visitors applying for F, M, or J visas face invasive demands to make their personal social media accounts public.

Charles Kajoloweka has recommended a more balanced approach to address the issues Malawians would face.

"Your administration has consistcntly emphasized the importance of strengthening U.S.-Africa partnerships. Malawi, a steadfast ally, has long stood for democracy, peace, and cooperation in the global community," said part of the letter.

"Imposing blanket restrictions on our citizens risks weakening this historic relationship and undermining the very values of fairness, opportunity, and justice that the United
States has represented to the world for generations," added part of the letter.

The organizations claim that Malawi is not among the highest visa overstay offenders.

They says according to official U.S. data, only about 250 Malawians have overstayed visas in recent years-a negligible figure compared to other countries that have not been subjected to such restrictions.

The statement reads that "To single out Malawi under these circumstances appears unjustified and unfair. Such measures risk sending a message that law-abiding citizens are being penalized for the actions of a very few, undermining trust and goodwill between our nations."
